A Resolution was passed by the St. Bernard Parish Government Council on April 2, 2013. The basic language of the resolution is to seek relief for the victims of the BP Oil Spill so as to exempt Commercial Fisherman from Federal Taxes for any funds received from the BP Settlement proceeds or future litigation. SEE THE RESOLUTION HERE
Support the resolution to make Oil Spill Settlement money to commercial fishermen tax exempt.
These funds, if tax exempted, would ultimately stay within the communities where the fishermen live and work. Retaining these funds may very well be the economic stimulus required to keep the industry up and running until, hopefully, both environmental and market conditions improve.
George Barisich, President of United Commercial Fisherman’s Association, is spearheading efforts to build support in the form of resolutions from neighboring coastal parishes that were similarly affected just as St. Bernard Parish.
